A HOT Day at the Lake

Just a little while ago now, Lucas and I, along with some friends, spent the day at White Pine Beach. White Pine Beach, also known as Sasumat Lake, is a beautiful spot where families and teenagers flock in the summer to enjoy the hot sun and cool lake waters. Last Sunday was no exception as hundreds of cars searched for parking spaces and hundreds more people searched for the perfect spot on the beach. Lucas and I settled in to our spot on the grass nicely, making sure our water was close by and our magazines even closer. For quite some time we were emerged in our respective news or car stories, enjoying the sunshine and the laughter of people around us. I relaxed in confidence knowing that we had prepared for our day, the food was packed, water was cool, and sunscreen was lathered on with plenty more on hand to reapply. It was when I finally surfaced from my magazine that I noticed a worrying trend. All the girls around me were in their tiny bathing suits lathering on spf 4 sunscreen or putting none on at all. As someone who does not leave the house on a rainy day without sunscreen I could not believe what I was seeing.

The sun is getting hotter every year and as it heats up so does the danger of exposure to it. Skin cancer is now a common cancer and is raising in young girls. I am not going to pretend to be an expert on this but I think it's common knowledge now that UV rays can cause skin cancer and in many cases do cause cancer. If there is a method that helps fight this why not use it? I truly hope that a day comes when having a tan is not a cool thing and people take this danger seriously.

Why the New Look?

So I am sure you've noticed the new look of my blog. This change was not because I was unhappy with the old look or because I felt that I needed a change. Recently I was told by a friend at work about a search engine powered by google called Blackle.com (note the new link to your right!). The premise of Blackle.com is to save energy by having a black screen load onto your computer rather than a white screen. This is because it takes less energy to load black than it does to load white. The search engine is exactly the same as google but with a nice environmental twist. Why? Well, because every little bit counts. And don't forget that you're paying for that energy pumping into your house so why not use a little less and pay a little less while you're at it.

Thus, now when you load my blog you're computer will use a little less energy than when my whole background was white. Call it hopping on the bandwagon if you will but I'm happy to do it if it makes just a little difference. Aren't you??
