Saturday Night @ Media Club

In searching for something to get up to Saturday night a bunch of us decided to head downtown. Not feeling the club scene, I suggested checking out the Media Club on Cambie (one of my very favourite music venues for local artists). It turned out to be a great idea. There was a CD release party going on for an up and coming artist named Mark Petersen. His music was awesome. He has a very original sounding voice that really added to his different sound. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and Lucas and I were so impressed that we both picked up his CD on the way out. I believe you can find him on itunes so if you get the chance check him out.

You can find a brief profile on the band here : http://www.nw-radio.com/bands/alphabetical/M/

V for Vendetta

Last night I went to see 'V for Vendetta' staring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. The film takes place in Britain in the future, a Britain that is ruled by fear. Sound familiar? Perhaps similar to our neighbours to the south? I realise that the extreme that is portrayed in this film is just that, an extreme but what is most frightening about it is that it is completely possible. Perhaps there will not be a man in a Guy Fox mask trying to start a revolution but it can happen. Lets just all try not to forget that caption at the top of this poster, "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people". The film is extremely captivating, you are on the edge of your seat throughout the entire two hours. It is very visually pleasing with impressive cinematography and action sequences. I would strongly strongly recommend seeing this movie is the theatre, this is not a renter as a great deal of the power that this movie portrays would be lost on a Television screen. Natalie Portman gives a very impressive performance showing she can be a lot more than Queen Amidala (or however you spell that). Go see this movie!!

I also have to mention that during the previews for this film we were lucky enough to see a preview for 'The Davinci Code' which I am EXTREMELY excited about. It looks so good. It's amazing seeing all those images that I loved so much from the book come alive. People, just do me one favour, take the effort to read the book before you see the movie, otherwise its just lazy! Plus you may not understand everything because there are many things in a book that a film has to leave out. 'The Davinci Code' comes out May 19th, I'll be going that night if anyone wishes to come with me!!

james blunt-back to bedlam

Normally, I don't do CD/Music Reviews, I'm more of a movie review girl as you know, however I felt inclined to write about the James Blunt Album 'back to bedlam'. This cd is amazing from start to finish, in little over half an hour of music Blunt ensures that you are a lifetime fan. The CD is quite short however every minute is pure gold. What an amazing CD, I cannot stress enough that this is an essential album for all music lovers to own no matter what type of music you listen to.

Another Angel in Heaven

When I heard, at the end of 2005, that Mr. Vint had been diagnosed with Cancer, not once did I think that it would eventually claim his life. If anyone could successfully fight cancer, it was MV. When I heard yesterday that MV had passed away the previous morning I was at first in shock. The sinking reality of how powerful Cancer really is sunk in immediately. Then the tears came. But the tears did not last for very long. This is not because I was not sad that Mr. Vint had passed away, it was because I know, in my heart, that he would not want us to be so sad. He was the type of man who would want his life celebrated. I called my best friend Tara, whom I met in Mr.Vint's Grade 11 Musical Theatre Class, and instead of crying together we shared and recalled all the wonderful stories and memories we had of MV. The confidence he instilled in us, the pride he took in his work, just the amazing person he was. Over the two years I was lucky enough to be in MVs classes, he became more than a teacher to me, he was a dear friend. This is something you will hear from every student he's ever taught, guaranteed. This is what set MV apart from all other teachers, he cared so much and invested in every one of his students. He will be dearly missed. WLYVM MV SYS!!

And for all of us who had the pleasure of being involved in one of MVs musicals, plays, etc., lets never forget that saying he told us before every performance,

Good, better, best, never let it rest until your good's better and your better's best!

Those of you who know me well, know that normally I am not a very religious person. You also know that I was brought up catholic and one of the catholic traditions that I do participate in is Lent. For those of you who do not know what this is, it is when you give something up for 40 days (Think '40 Days and 40 Nights' starring Josh Hartnett) It is meant to be a scarifice of something that you would normally indulge in on a regular basis. For this years lent I have decided to give up procrastination. Now, normally people give up such things as chocolate or coffee as I once did, or in the case of the film Hartnett gives up sex. I've chosen to go a different route this year, a route that I hope will be more beneficial than giving up coffee would be. I am without a doubt a procrastinator, you will find me in the library the week before a paper is due picking up all my sources and frantically finishing papers the day before they are due. I am in luck this year, as every year, because lent falls right when all my papers and assignments are due. I must say that procrasitination is something that I do enjoy therefore this will be a sacrifice and it will be very difficult. However, I'm going to use this as incentive to quit my procratinating nature. I wish myself luck and I will need it.
